About us

Dave Johnson

Dave started piano lessons at the age of seven, and during 10 years of study, passed grade seven in the ABRSM exam school. During later school years, he developed an ability to play by ear through extensive aural training using school computers. This no doubt helped to ease the path required to train in the piano industry, especially piano tuning. After enquiring to Giller Pianos about possible apprenticeships, he was pointed in the direction of the piano technical courses at Newark College in Lincolnshire, where he studied from 2013 to 2016. During that time, he became a regular face in many restaurants and pubs around the area providing nights of live piano entertainment, where his skills as a pianist entertainer were honed. This also provided a means to fund the years at college. After touring the country with a band for little under a year, he returned to Beccles and began professional singing lessons with a teacher specializing in the “Old Italian School”. Soon after he began touring venues as a vocal pianist in Norfolk and Suffolk - where some of his many pianos currently reside.

Soon after graduating from the three year course in Piano Tuning and Restoration at Newark College in 2016, Dave spent an additional year studying and practicing technical concert work under the guidance of Andrew Giller at Giller Pianos and the Old Granary Studio. His skills have been tested extensively after being appointed as the piano tuner for many prestigious venues including Potton Hall - a classical recording venue in Suffolk and the world renowned Aldeburgh Festival at Snape Maltings. Here he maintained the many Steinway pianos during the 2018 Proms concert series and undertook recording work tuning sessions with many well-known artists such as Daniel Barenboim and Peter Donohoe.

Andrew Giller

One of the regions foremost piano craftsmen, Andrew Giller has been working for over 30 years in East Anglia restoring fine English and German pianos at his workshop and studios in the idyllic countryside of the Norfolk/Suffolk border, Andrew specializes in the care of the finest makes of piano, in particular those of Steinway, Bechstein and Blüthner.

Most of Andrew’s time is now spent as a concert piano technician traveling throughout East Anglia to tune and service venue pianos, or delivery of his hire instruments. Andrew keeps a stock of six Steinway pianos which include three full size 9’ model D’s.

Andrew Giller Concert Pianos are used extensively throughout Norfolk, Suffolk and the eastern region. All of the pianos are seen and heard at international festivals and have been played by many world famous pianists. Pianos are also hired to concert clubs, music societies, theatres and individuals around East Anglia for recitals and performances of all kinds – even at a car park for an orchestral concert forming part of the Aldeburgh Festival 2015.

As well as the concert grand stock there are smaller ‘boudoir’ instruments such as model M and model B for more intimate venues. All of our pianos are cared for and regularly serviced to a very high standard.

Recent engagements for our pianos include performances with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Lowestoft and Stevenage; Aldeburgh Festival; Latitude Festival; Norfolk and Norwich Festival; Oxford Lieder Festival; Recording projects for Pascal and Ami Rogé and at many other events nationally and around the region.

Andrew is currently Vice President of the Piano Tuners Association
